KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s health authorities are facing renewed pressure over the availability of essential medicines after concerns emerged about sickle-cell drug shortages in the Busoga sub-region.
The parliamentary Health Committee has raised alarm over reports that some hospitals have experienced shortages of key medicines for up to four months.
Among the medicines reportedly affected is Hydroxyurea, an important treatment used in the management of sickle-cell disease.
The shortages have raised concerns about continuity of treatment for patients who depend on regular access to essential medicines.
Sickle-cell disease requires long-term management, making reliable supplies of medicines particularly important for patients and healthcare providers.
The latest concerns have placed the spotlight on Uganda’s medical-supply system and the need to ensure that medicines reach health facilities in sufficient quantities.
Health officials and lawmakers are expected to examine the causes of the shortages and possible measures to prevent prolonged stock-outs.
The issue is particularly significant for regional hospitals that serve large populations and provide specialised care to patients who may have limited alternatives.
Uganda has continued to strengthen its broader healthcare system, including emergency preparedness and disease-response capacity. The World Health Organization recently highlighted improvements that have helped the country reduce emergency-response times from weeks to hours.
However, consistent availability of essential medicines remains critical to ensuring that improvements in health infrastructure translate into reliable patient care.
The Busoga situation could therefore increase pressure on health authorities to strengthen procurement, distribution and monitoring of essential medicines.
For sickle-cell patients and their families, resolving the reported shortages will be crucial to maintaining uninterrupted treatment and reducing avoidable health complications.
