KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda is stepping up its technology ambitions as the government seeks to use digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and local innovation to drive long-term economic growth.
The strategy was highlighted at the 3rd National ICT Summit, held at the National ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa from September 2–4, bringing together government officials, technology companies, innovators and development partners.
Uganda is targeting a US$500 billion economy, with digital technologies expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding productivity and creating new opportunities.
ICT Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba emphasised the need to invest in digital skills, strengthen Uganda's innovation ecosystem and scale locally developed technology solutions.
The approach could create opportunities for Ugandan startups working in artificial intelligence, fintech, digital services, cybersecurity, e-commerce and other emerging technology fields.
Government and industry stakeholders are also looking to develop a stronger pipeline of technology talent capable of building solutions for Uganda's specific economic and social challenges.
The focus on homegrown innovation could help Uganda reduce dependence on imported technology while creating new digital businesses and skilled jobs.
The latest technology push forms part of Uganda's broader digital-transformation agenda, which includes expanding connectivity and improving the delivery of government and commercial services through digital platforms.
For Uganda's technology sector, the US$500 billion ambition could provide a powerful long-term market for innovators, investors and technology companies.
The challenge will be turning policy commitments into widespread access, commercially successful local technologies and measurable improvements in productivity.
Uganda's latest ICT strategy signals that digitalisation and AI are moving from supporting technologies to central components of the country's economic-development plans.
