The northern Eswatini town of Pigg’s Peak is strengthening its cultural identity after hosting its first Inter-Wards Cultural Festival, bringing residents together to celebrate traditional performance, local talent and community heritage.
Held at Gobolondlo Hall, the inaugural event featured cultural competitions and performances that attracted residents, community leaders and public representatives. Musicians, including M Nation and Histo, entertained attendees, while performers from different age groups showcased their talents.
Pigg’s Peak Member of Parliament Jabulani Mabuza encouraged residents to embrace their cultural identity and preserve the traditions that connect communities across generations.
The event also received support from the Pigg’s Peak Town Council and the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC). ENCAC chief executive Stanley Dlamini highlighted the role of cultural activities in preserving heritage, nurturing performers and creating opportunities for people working in the creative sector.
Beyond entertainment, organisers and community leaders pointed to the festival’s potential to support local livelihoods. Events of this kind can create opportunities for performers, vendors and small businesses while encouraging young people to participate in cultural activities.
In a significant development, Pigg’s Peak Mayor Sipho Shongwe declared the festival an annual event, creating the foundation for a recurring celebration of local heritage and artistic expression.
The initiative offers a model that other communities in Eswatini could consider as they work to preserve cultural traditions, promote social unity and provide emerging artists with opportunities to perform.
