A long-running land dispute in Buea, Cameroon’s South West Region, has intensified following the reported arrest of youths from Ewonda village, raising renewed concerns about tensions between Ewonda and Lower Ewonda over ancestral land.

According to a report published by Cameroon News Agency on October 17, gendarmes arrested youths in Ewonda on October 13 over allegations of trespassing and destruction of property on the contested land. Lower Ewonda representatives said the arrests were justified, citing an injunction affecting parts of the disputed area. However, Ewonda youth leader Efome Ferdinand denied that members of his community were responsible for the alleged destruction.

The dispute concerns approximately 101 hectares on the lower slopes of Mount Cameroon and has continued for several years. Conflicting claims over the communities’ historical boundaries and land ownership have been complicated by changing administrative decisions involving land certificates.

The report also highlights concerns about the potential for further confrontation if the disagreement is not resolved. Community representatives have called for dialogue, while some residents are urging higher authorities to intervene.

A peaceful and transparent resolution is urgently needed to prevent further tensions, protect residents and clarify the status of the contested land. No final settlement was reported as of October 17.
