Bangui, Central African Republic — October 23, 2026
The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has confirmed the successful release of hostages held by an armed group, marking a significant development in the country's ongoing security efforts.
According to a briefing delivered to the UN Security Council on October 20, the hostages, including the sub-prefect of Bambouti, were released on October 19 following months of mediation involving local leaders and MINUSCA. The mission supported the operation by securing the release area.
Despite this development, security concerns remain in several border regions, particularly in the northeast and southeast of the country. Armed-group activity, civilian displacement and threats along cross-border routes continue to challenge national authorities and peacekeeping personnel.
The UN also highlighted progress in disarmament and demobilisation, reporting that more than 1,900 combatants had been disarmed and demobilised since July 2025 with international support.
MINUSCA has called for continued investment in national security institutions and a carefully managed transition of responsibilities to Central African authorities.
The latest developments underline the importance of sustained peacebuilding, local mediation and civilian protection as the country works to consolidate security gains.
