Cameroon’s opposition Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) is facing a new internal challenge ahead of its extraordinary leadership convention scheduled for October 17 in Yaoundé.
Edou Cyrille, a member of the party’s Sangmélima municipal federation, has reportedly asked the Yaoundé IV sub-prefect to prohibit the meeting, questioning whether the officials who called the convention had the authority to do so.
The dispute comes as the CRM prepares to elect new leaders following the September 8 resignation of longtime party president Maurice Kamto. Second Vice President Tiriane Balbine Nadège Noah has been serving as interim leader.
The latest objection adds to a series of disagreements over the convention’s organisation and the party’s internal leadership process. An earlier request linked to the dispute was rejected by a court in September, which ruled that it lacked jurisdiction.
The administrative authority must now consider the latest request as the convention date approaches. The outcome could affect the party’s immediate leadership plans and its ability to maintain unity ahead of future electoral contests.
The key question is whether the CRM will proceed with its planned convention or face another delay. As of the latest report, no final decision on the new request had been confirmed.
