MALABO, Equatorial Guinea — October 23, 2026
Equatorial Guinea and France are seeking to strengthen bilateral relations following high-level diplomatic talks in Malabo, with discussions focusing on naval training, language education and economic development.
On October 22, Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue met France's ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, Sonia Doña Pérez, at the country's State Headquarters. The meeting reviewed existing cooperation and explored opportunities to deepen relations between the two governments.
Naval training emerged as a key area of discussion. Both sides examined the role of the Tica Naval School, a training institution intended to prepare officers and non-commissioned officers from several African countries.
The discussions also addressed expanding French-language learning in Equatorial Guinea and continuing French support for the government's economic diversification programme.
The meeting marked the first encounter between the vice-president and the ambassador since she presented her credentials to President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo on October 8.
According to the official government announcement, both representatives expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. The ambassador also reaffirmed France's willingness to support Equatorial Guinea's development objectives.
The diplomatic engagement could open further opportunities for cooperation in education, maritime training and economic development. The practical impact will depend on future agreements and the implementation of initiatives discussed by both sides.
The talks highlight Malabo's continuing efforts to maintain international partnerships as the country pursues broader development and diversification goals.
