HARARE — Zimbabwe is experiencing rapid growth in digital connectivity after internet and data traffic increased by 57.28 percent during the first quarter of 2026, according to a sector performance report presented to Cabinet.

The growth has been linked to the continued expansion of LTE and 5G infrastructure, alongside rising smartphone ownership and increased use of mobile internet services.

Technology experts say the sharp increase in data usage reflects Zimbabwe’s accelerating digital transformation. More consumers, businesses, and institutions are relying on mobile connectivity for communication, online services, digital payments, education, and business operations.

The government has identified telecommunications and information and communication technologies as key pillars of its wider digital transformation agenda.

Industry observers say continued investment in network infrastructure will be important to support rising demand and expand reliable connectivity beyond major urban centres.

The latest data surge highlights the growing importance of mobile broadband and next-generation networks in Zimbabwe’s digital economy.

As smartphone adoption and high-speed network coverage continue to expand, Zimbabwe’s technology sector is entering a period of stronger digital demand and increased opportunities for telecoms and technology businesses.
