Zimbabwe is stepping up efforts to strengthen its digital security framework as the government considers new measures to address online threats, social media misuse and the spread of false information.
Speaking at the Zimbabwe National Defence University Media Indaba in Mazowe, Director of Media and Information Services George Chisoko said the government was reviewing media laws to respond to emerging challenges associated with digital platforms.
The discussions focused on the growing impact of misinformation and disinformation, which authorities say can undermine public confidence and create security concerns.
The Zimbabwe Media Commission is also conducting public awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging responsible social media use. Its Chief Director, Academy Chinamhora, said the initiative seeks to improve public understanding of how information should be shared online.
Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation Director of News and Current Affairs Effort Magoso highlighted the importance of factual reporting in countering misleading information circulating across digital platforms.
The meeting brought together representatives from public and private media organisations to examine ways of protecting the country's information environment as technology continues to transform communication.
The developments highlight the growing importance of cybersecurity, digital literacy and responsible online communication in Zimbabwe.
The proposed legal reviews and awareness initiatives are still part of an ongoing process. Their effectiveness will depend on implementation, public engagement and safeguards that protect legitimate expression while addressing genuine digital threats.
