Zambia’s digital transformation agenda has received renewed support from telecommunications operator MTN Zambia, following discussions with the Ministry of Technology and Science on expanding connectivity, improving digital access and strengthening emerging technology adoption.

During a meeting with Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati on November 2, MTN outlined its ongoing and planned initiatives, including ambitions to expand its 5G network and improve network utilisation.

The discussions also highlighted the need to extend reliable and affordable internet services to rural and underserved communities, where limited connectivity continues to restrict access to digital opportunities.

MTN indicated that it was exploring options for more affordable smartphones, including devices capable of supporting wider 5G adoption. The company also discussed equipment-related challenges affecting some customers and its intention to participate in the C-band spectrum auction.

Artificial intelligence and digital government services were other important topics. The ministry emphasised the need for stronger interoperability between government systems, supported by trusted digital identity infrastructure, to make public services more convenient and accessible.

The discussions signal growing cooperation between government and the private sector to accelerate Zambia’s digital development. Wider connectivity and affordable devices could help more citizens access online education, digital financial services and business opportunities.

However, the meeting did not announce a confirmed nationwide 5G rollout timetable or a new spectrum allocation. The impact of the discussions will depend on future investment, implementation and continued collaboration.
