The survey reveals that AI is changing the nature of technology jobs rather than simply eliminating them. Businesses are increasingly using AI to automate repetitive tasks, improve productivity and support employees in complex work.
Demand is particularly strong for:
- AI engineers and machine learning specialists
- Generative AI professionals
- Cloud computing experts
- Cybersecurity specialists
- Data analytics professionals
- AI governance and compliance officers
The research also highlights significant skills shortages. A lack of workplace experience accounts for 24% of reported ICT skills gaps, while education and training gaps account for 20%.
Interestingly, nearly 80% of surveyed ICT professionals indicated that AI had reduced their workload or task complexity.
IITPSA says South Africa needs stronger partnerships between businesses and educational institutions, alongside expanded internships, workplace training and professional certification programmes.
The growing demand for AI expertise could create important career opportunities for South African graduates, technology entrepreneurs and experienced ICT professionals. However, developing a skilled local workforce will be essential if the country wants to compete in the expanding global AI economy.
