HARARE — Zimbabwe is strengthening its critical-minerals and logistics sectors after introducing a new rail freight option to transport lithium concentrate from the country to the port of Maputo in Mozambique.
The route links the Gwanda Lithium Mine with Maputo through Zimbabwean and Mozambican rail networks, creating an alternative to road transport for the country’s growing lithium export industry.
Business analysts say the new rail connection could reduce logistics costs and improve the competitiveness of Zimbabwe’s mineral exports. Rail transport is also expected to ease pressure on roads while creating a more efficient route to international markets.
Zimbabwe has attracted significant investment in its lithium industry in recent years, with growing attention on local processing and the development of higher-value mineral products.
The expanded rail option could support mining companies, logistics operators, rail authorities, and port businesses as Zimbabwe seeks to strengthen its position in the global critical-minerals supply chain.
The new export route marks an important business and infrastructure development for Zimbabwe’s lithium sector, connecting domestic mining operations with a major regional trade gateway.
