LUSAKA — Zambia is strengthening its healthcare system through an expanded community mental health and wellness initiative aimed at improving access to counselling, psychological support, and early mental health intervention services.
The programme will increase community outreach, strengthen referrals between primary healthcare facilities and mental health specialists, and promote public education on stress management, depression, anxiety, and emotional well-being.
Health experts say early mental health support plays an essential role in improving overall public health. Expanding access to counselling services and community-based care can help individuals receive assistance earlier while encouraging healthier communities.
Healthcare providers are also increasing training for frontline medical workers to improve mental health screening, patient referrals, and community engagement. Public awareness campaigns are expected to encourage more people to seek professional support when needed.
The initiative also promotes collaboration between healthcare facilities, schools, workplaces, and community organisations to improve mental health education and reduce stigma.
The expanded programme reflects Zambia’s commitment to building a more inclusive healthcare system that supports both physical and mental well-being.
