Algeria is strengthening efforts to improve healthcare quality by directing scientific research towards the country’s most pressing medical needs, following a new initiative announced by the Ministry of Health.

On October 22, 2026, Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Aït Messaoudene chaired a meeting of the Permanent Sectoral Commission for Scientific Research and Technological Development to review research priorities and establish practical measures for improving the healthcare system.

The meeting focused on making medical research more useful for hospitals and patients. Officials discussed developing a roadmap to guide research projects, improve coordination and ensure scientific findings can contribute to better clinical practices and healthcare decisions.

Digitalisation is also a central part of the plan. The ministry highlighted the use of a dedicated digital platform for health research data to improve information sharing, coordinate researchers and track the progress of projects.

Another priority is expanding specialised training for research personnel working within healthcare institutions. The ministry aims to strengthen the skills and capacity needed to conduct studies, evaluate results and translate evidence into practical improvements in patient care.

The initiative comes as healthcare systems worldwide increasingly rely on research and digital tools to improve service quality and resource management.

For Algerian patients, the key question will be how these plans translate into tangible improvements, including better-informed treatment practices, stronger research capacity and more effective healthcare services. The ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the commission and implementing its work programme, although specific new patient services and measurable outcomes have not yet been announced.
