SÃO TOMÉ, São Tomé and Príncipe — São Tomé and Príncipe is taking another step toward modernising its financial technology infrastructure as the Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe advances its digital-transformation agenda.
A recent IT and telecommunications procurement sought a resident technical adviser to support the Central Bank’s Digital Transformation Agenda. The tender, published in August, reached its September 7 deadline, highlighting the institution’s efforts to strengthen the technical foundations of its digital operations.
The initiative comes as digital services become increasingly important to the country's banking and financial sectors. A stronger technology environment at the central bank could help improve digital financial services, electronic processes, data management and operational efficiency.
São Tomé and Príncipe already has a relatively significant level of internet adoption for its size. DataReportal estimates that 148,000 people were using the internet at the end of 2025, representing 61.5% of the population.
Internet infrastructure, however, still has room for development. Internet Society data for 2026 indicates that only 3% of users can access online resources through IPv6, while the country's digital-public-services readiness score was 43.08 in the latest UN measurement cited by the organisation.
Modernising central-bank systems could therefore become an important part of the country's broader digital-economy strategy, particularly as financial institutions increasingly rely on secure electronic platforms and data-driven operations.
The Central Bank's digital-transformation programme signals that technology is becoming an increasingly important pillar of São Tomé and Príncipe's financial-sector modernisation.
