SÃO TOMÉ, São Tomé and Príncipe — A growing cultural exchange between São Tomé and Príncipe and China is taking centre stage as local performers compete in the grand final of the Chinese Song Contest “SOM em São Tomé e Príncipe.”

The competition was launched by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in São Tomé and Príncipe under the theme “Ritmos Sem Fronteiras” (Rhythms Without Borders). The initiative invited non-Chinese residents of São Tomé and Príncipe to perform Chinese songs and showcase their musical talent.

After the preliminary stage, finalists were selected through performances and public engagement, with the grand final scheduled for September 11, 2026, at the Chinese Embassy in São Tomé.

Several São Toméan performers have been featured during the competition, performing Chinese-language songs and introducing local audiences to a different musical tradition.

The initiative highlights how music can create cultural connections across languages and borders, while giving young Santomean performers an opportunity to develop their artistic skills and participate in international cultural exchange.

The contest also adds a new dimension to cultural relations between São Tomé and Príncipe and China, where education, cultural programmes and people-to-people exchanges have become part of wider bilateral cooperation.

The grand final is expected to bring together performers, cultural representatives and audiences for an evening celebrating music, talent and friendship between the two countries.
