KIGALI, Rwanda — Rwanda has strengthened its healthcare infrastructure with the completion of the renovation and expansion of Masaka Hospital, significantly increasing the facility’s capacity.

The upgraded hospital now has 837 beds, compared with 127 previously, while its outpatient capacity has increased to as many as 2,000 visits per day. The facility is being positioned as a major teaching and referral hospital for Kigali.

The expansion is expected to improve access to specialist medical services and reduce pressure on other major hospitals as Rwanda continues expanding healthcare capacity.

The development is particularly significant as Rwanda works to strengthen its health workforce and expand specialised services under its 4x4 healthcare reform programme. The government is prioritising additional training in areas including surgery, anaesthesia, emergency medicine, radiography and biomedical laboratory services.

The expanded Masaka Hospital could become an important centre for advanced treatment, medical training and healthcare referrals in Kigali.

The project also highlights Rwanda's continuing investment in healthcare infrastructure as the country seeks to bring higher-quality services closer to its growing population.
