LILONGWE, Malawi — Malawi is stepping up efforts to strengthen commercial ties with the United States as the government seeks to attract more foreign investment and expand export opportunities.

The latest business engagement comes as Malawi works to create stronger links between local companies and international investors, with US investment emerging as an important area of focus.

The government and private sector are looking at opportunities that could increase trade, support businesses and bring additional capital into the economy.

Greater US participation could provide opportunities for Malawian companies to access new markets, technology, financing and international partnerships.

The push comes against a challenging domestic business environment, where foreign-exchange shortages have continued to constrain production capacity for many firms. A recent business-sector assessment found that a significant share of companies were operating well below full capacity during the first half of 2026.

For Malawi, attracting investment will therefore depend not only on international interest but also on improving the operating environment for businesses, strengthening exports and addressing foreign-exchange constraints.

The renewed focus on US-Malawi trade could give local businesses another route to international markets while supporting investment and economic diversification.
