BANJUL, The Gambia — The government has signed contracts worth approximately US$14.2 million to extend electricity access to 241 communities in the Upper River Region (URR) and Central River Region (CRR), in a new infrastructure investment announced on September 28.
The project is fully funded through the national budget and forms part of ongoing efforts to expand electricity access in communities that remain without reliable power. The contract-signing ceremony brought together officials from the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), contractors and other government representatives.
Minister Nani Juwara said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to expanding access to electricity. He also recalled that residents in the two regions had appealed for inclusion in the national electrification programme during the February 2026 inauguration of projects covering 719 communities.
The contracts mark a further step in the country’s electrification drive. Details on the construction schedule and the expected connection dates for the 241 communities were not specified in the announcement.
