KOLOLI, The Gambia — The Gambia has launched a three-day workshop to develop its first comprehensive policy framework for the creative industries sector, bringing together government, cultural and development stakeholders to review a draft plan.
The workshop was launched through a collaboration between the International Trade Centre (ITC), the European Union (EU) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. Held in Kololi, the sessions are focused on reviewing and validating a proposed policy intended to help unlock the creative sector’s potential and strengthen its contribution to national development.
At the opening, ITC Country Representative Yusupha Keita highlighted the potential of the initiative to support job creation, economic activity and cultural preservation. The policy process also aims to address how the sector can become more professional and formally recognised.
The workshop is a step in shaping the framework; the reports do not yet detail a final policy or its implementation timetable. Further decisions will depend on the review process and the authorities’ next steps.
