Bensouda announced his resignation in a video address on Friday, 6 November, describing the decision as voluntary and confirming that the council had formally recognised his departure.
The resignation was supported through a General Council resolution, receiving 15 votes in favour, two abstentions and one vote against.
Bensouda became mayor in May 2018 and served for more than eight years. His departure marks a transition from municipal leadership to national political ambitions.
Coalition 2026 Presidential Bid
Bensouda is the presidential candidate of Coalition 2026, through his UNITE political movement. His entry into the national presidential contest adds another significant development to the political competition ahead of the December election.
During his farewell address, he emphasised that leaving the mayor's office did not mean abandoning the residents of Kanifing. He also called for stronger local government institutions with greater financial resources and administrative autonomy.
Major Development Projects Left Behind
The former mayor highlighted several projects that he wants his successor to complete, including:
- D40 million Mbari Pa Dembo Market in Serekunda, featuring 96 shops.
- Redevelopment of Bakau Community Centre.
- D300 million municipal road and drainage programme.
- D35 million Migrant Resilience Hub.
- A €500,000 compost plant at Bakau Women's Garden.
- A $1 million Bloomberg Mayors Challenge initiative focused on youth employment.
He urged the incoming municipal leadership to maintain continuity and ensure that ongoing development projects benefit local communities.
The resignation comes as The Gambia prepares for its 5 December 2026 presidential election, with the Independent Electoral Commission overseeing the electoral process.
Bensouda's move from municipal government to national politics could become an important factor in the upcoming presidential race, particularly as opposition movements seek to challenge the incumbent administration.
