The project is expected to strengthen electricity supply across The Gambia by increasing access to renewable energy and reducing dependence on expensive fuel-based electricity generation.
Under the agreement, the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement, while the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs signed implementation agreements on behalf of the government.
The 85MW battery storage system is particularly important because it will allow solar-generated electricity to be supplied to the national grid during evening peak-demand periods.
The investment is expected to deliver several economic benefits:
- Increase renewable electricity generation.
- Improve electricity reliability for businesses and households.
- Reduce dependence on fuel-based power generation.
- Support industrial development and private-sector investment.
- Create opportunities for local suppliers and service providers.
In a separate development, President Barrow also presided over the signing of a US$46 million Integrated Waste Management Project with the Jospong Group of Companies. The project will introduce improved waste collection, sorting, recycling and disposal services across Banjul, Kanifing and Brikama.
Together, the two investments represent a significant opportunity for The Gambia's economic development. Reliable electricity and improved waste infrastructure could help create a stronger business environment, attract investors and support sustainable urban growth.
