Mozambique’s private sector could gain access to up to US$3 billion in business opportunities under Eni’s local-content strategy for the Coral Norte liquefied natural gas project.
According to Eni’s Director of Procurement in Mozambique, Fabrizio Russo, the company has earmarked the funds for Mozambican businesses participating in the project’s supply chain. The strategy is intended to go beyond individual contracts by helping local companies build longer-term capacity in the gas industry.
The Coral Norte project in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin is valued at more than US$7.2 billion. Eni says construction is around 70% complete, with production expected to begin in 2028.
The project is expected to produce approximately 3.5 million tonnes of LNG annually, as well as about 4,300 barrels of condensate per day.
Eni is holding meetings with potential Mozambican suppliers to identify companies capable of providing goods and services for the project. The initiative comes as Mozambique implements its new local-content framework, which includes requirements for Mozambican participation in certain qualifying activities.
For Mozambican businesses, the planned spending could create opportunities in logistics, engineering, construction, maintenance, professional services and other areas linked to the LNG supply chain.
