HARARE — Zimbabwean health authorities are investigating an acute respiratory illness outbreak at St Faith’s High School in Makoni District, Manicaland Province, after more than 382 students were reportedly affected.

The illness reportedly began on July 16 and has caused flu-like symptoms among students at the boarding school. Eight learners have been admitted to hospital, while the exact cause of the outbreak remains under investigation.

Health officials are working to determine whether the illness is linked to a viral respiratory infection or another infectious disease. The investigation has reportedly been complicated by a shortage of diagnostic testing kits, highlighting the importance of rapid laboratory capacity during outbreaks.

The outbreak is currently reported to be confined to the school, while health teams continue monitoring affected students and assessing the situation.

Public-health experts say crowded boarding environments can allow respiratory infections to spread quickly, making early detection, isolation, hygiene measures, and accurate testing essential.

The Manicaland outbreak has renewed attention on Zimbabwe’s disease-surveillance capacity and the need for rapid diagnostic support during suspected health emergencies.
