Togo Port Workers Begin 72-Hour Strike as Labor Tensions Rise in Lomé
LOMÉ, Togo — A new labor dispute is putting attention on the Port Autonome de Lomé, where workers represented by the SYAPAL union have called a 72-hour strike from August 11 to August 13, 2026.
The union says the action follows what it describes as insufficient progress in discussions with port management. SYAPAL has raised 12 demands and argues that earlier conciliation meetings failed to produce an official response from management.
The dispute could create concerns for port operations, particularly because the Port of Lomé is an important regional logistics and transshipment hub.
SYAPAL is also pursuing legal action over issues it says concern workers' statutory rights and is asking members and supporters to contribute to legal costs.
The strike comes after an earlier labor dispute at the port was suspended following talks with authorities. The latest action puts renewed pressure on management to resolve the outstanding demands and restore social dialogue.
