Guinea-Bissau Academics Propose National Unity Government to Resolve Political Crisis
BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau — A group of Guinea-Bissau researchers and academics has proposed a national dialogue and unity government as a possible path out of the country's continuing political crisis.
In an open letter addressed to the African Union, ECOWAS, the United Nations, the European Union and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, the group called for an inclusive transitional framework that would bring together political parties, military representatives, civil society and other national stakeholders.
The proposal includes confidence-building measures, the release of political detainees, protection for opposition figures and guarantees for fundamental freedoms. The academics also called for international organisations to help mediate the process.
They proposed that a future unity government include representatives from major political groups, independent experts, women and youth organisations, religious communities, the media and business sectors.
The initiative comes as Guinea-Bissau prepares for a constitutional referendum on August 30 and general elections scheduled for December 6, 2026. ECOWAS has also urged the transitional authorities to pursue an inclusive process leading back to constitutional order.
The proposal could add fresh pressure for political dialogue and broader participation as Guinea-Bissau approaches crucial decisions about its political future.
