DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Tanzania is turning increasingly to digital technology and data-driven systems to accelerate development of its Blue Economy and improve the management of marine and coastal resources.

The issue was highlighted during the fifth International Blue Economy Conference in Dar es Salaam, where policymakers, researchers and investors discussed technology-driven opportunities across the sector.

Officials said modernising the Blue Economy will require more than access to natural resources. Digital technologies, modern port and trade-management systems and scientific data are becoming increasingly important for improving productivity and decision-making.

The approach could benefit areas including maritime transport, fisheries, tourism, port operations and coastal resource management.

Tanzania is also placing emphasis on developing skilled professionals capable of applying technology and scientific knowledge to commercial opportunities.

The technology push could help Tanzania make better use of its extensive ocean, lake and coastal resources while improving efficiency across maritime industries.

The government’s communications ministry has separately stressed the importance of stronger ICT infrastructure as Tanzania expands its wider digital transformation agenda.

For technology companies and investors, the Blue Economy could therefore become an emerging market for digital platforms, data services, smart logistics and maritime technology.

Tanzania’s latest strategy signals that technology is becoming a central tool in transforming the country’s Blue Economy from a resource-based sector into a more data-driven digital industry.
