Accra, Ghana — Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged President John Dramani Mahama not to immediately assent to the Ghana Cocoa Board Bill, 2026, calling instead for broader consultation on the legislation.
The opposition party says additional discussions are needed before the bill becomes law, putting the legislation at the centre of a fresh political debate between the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development comes as the government continues efforts to reform Ghana’s cocoa sector, one of the country’s most important economic industries. The NPP’s position could intensify parliamentary and public debate over how COCOBOD should operate and how future reforms should be implemented.
The call also places renewed attention on the relationship between Ghana’s political parties and the country’s cocoa-sector policy, particularly as stakeholders consider the potential impact of legislative changes on farmers and the wider industry.
The President’s response to the NPP’s appeal is now likely to attract significant attention as debate over the Cocoa Board Bill continues.
