Opposition Parties Form Fresh Alliance Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Election

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s political landscape has entered a new phase after presidential candidates and leaders associated with the Accord Party, African Action Congress (AAC) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) announced plans to align their political forces ahead of the 2027 general election.

The leaders said they were concerned about the concentration of political power, weakening democratic institutions and reduced space for competitive politics, and agreed to work toward presenting voters with a joint alternative.

The emerging alliance could significantly reshape Nigeria’s opposition strategy if the participating parties are able to coordinate their structures, agree on candidates and mobilise supporters across the country.

The development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with President Bola Tinubu and the APC already facing growing competition from opposition groups.

The latest move could also increase pressure on other opposition parties and political figures to decide whether to operate independently or join a broader coalition.

For Nigerian voters, the key question will be whether the emerging alliance can translate its political cooperation into a credible nationwide electoral campaign.
