Adeleke Wins Osun Governorship Election in Major Nigeria Political Development
OSOGBO, Nigeria — Governor Ademola Adeleke has won the 2026 Osun State governorship election, securing a second term after a closely watched contest.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner after he polled 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, APC candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, who received 444,815 votes.
The result gives Adeleke another four-year mandate in Osun State and makes the election an important political development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The election also attracted significant security attention. Police said 295 suspects were arrested in connection with incidents recorded during the poll, with 293 subsequently released on bail while two remained in custody for further investigation.
The APC has said it is studying the results, with reports indicating that the party is considering its legal options.
Adeleke’s victory is likely to generate wider political debate about opposition strength, voter behaviour and the emerging alliances ahead of 2027.
