NIAMEY, Niger — Niger’s cultural sector is calling for renewed national attention to the preservation of the country’s rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions.

A new report published in Le Sahel on August 19 highlights concerns surrounding artistic creation in Niger and the challenges facing cultural actors. The report says cultural stakeholders are calling for greater mobilisation to safeguard Niger’s cultural heritage.

The appeal comes as artists, cultural organisations and heritage advocates seek stronger support for creative production and the preservation of traditions that form an important part of Niger’s national identity.

Niger has a diverse cultural landscape spanning traditional music, dance, crafts, oral traditions and community festivals. Recent cultural initiatives have also placed greater emphasis on using heritage to strengthen social cohesion and promote domestic tourism.

Protecting cultural heritage could also create new opportunities for young artists and cultural entrepreneurs, particularly if traditional arts are connected with tourism and the wider creative economy.

The latest call signals growing concern within Niger’s cultural community and puts heritage preservation back into the national conversation.
