Aoujeft Guetna Festival Showcases Mauritania’s Cultural Heritage

AOUEJFT, Mauritania — The second edition of the Guetna Season Festival has opened in Aoujeft, bringing renewed attention to Mauritania’s local traditions, cultural heritage and tourism potential.

The festival, which opened on August 7, 2026, is organized by the Association for Development Spaces for Youth Empowerment and Women’s Advancement. Local authorities said the event supports national efforts to promote Mauritanian culture and preserve cultural heritage.

Guetna, traditionally associated with Mauritania’s date harvest season, provides an important cultural moment for communities to celebrate local customs and social traditions.

Organizers are also using the festival to promote domestic tourism and Aoujeft’s heritage sites, while highlighting opportunities for local economic development. Authorities said the event could help showcase the unique cultural and tourism assets of the wilaya.

The festival brings together cultural officials, local representatives and community members, reinforcing the connection between heritage preservation, tourism and regional development.

For Aoujeft, the Guetna celebration offers a platform to turn local traditions into a stronger cultural attraction while preserving Mauritania’s distinctive heritage for future generations.
