Mauritania Expands Support for Artists and Creative Industries

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania — Mauritania is taking steps to strengthen its national arts and creative sector, with new institutions and programs designed to give artists greater professional support.

The government has established a National Institute of Arts and introduced the President of the Republic’s Prize for Fine Arts. Authorities have also adopted regulations governing professional artists and created a council representing arts professionals.

The reforms are intended to give Mauritanian artists greater recognition while creating a stronger structure for the country's creative economy. The government has also indicated that the new professional artists’ council will begin issuing artist identification cards.

Another major proposal is the planned Cultural City in Nouakchott, which is expected to include a palace of culture, heritage village and exhibition spaces. Plans also include expanding audiovisual and museum facilities in regional capitals.

The initiatives could provide new platforms for painters, musicians, performers, designers and other creative professionals.

For Mauritania’s arts community, stronger institutions and cultural infrastructure could help local talent reach wider audiences while preserving the country’s distinctive cultural identity.
