Libya’s Public Prosecution has ordered the pretrial detention of the pilot and co-pilot of a private jet that veered off the runway at Misrata International Airport.

The Cessna aircraft crashed while landing on September 14 and was subsequently destroyed by fire. No passengers were aboard, while the three-member crew survived the incident.

According to the Public Prosecution, investigators examined the aircraft wreckage, air-traffic-control data, weather information and evidence from technical personnel involved in the landing.

The pilots were questioned about the incident before prosecutors confronted them with evidence indicating they had operated the aircraft while intoxicated and had disregarded aviation and public-safety regulations. The investigation remains ongoing under Libyan and relevant international regulations.

The case has placed renewed attention on aviation safety and airport security procedures in Libya as authorities continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
