Libya’s political process has gained a new development after the House of Representatives endorsed the Smaller Convening Agreement reached through the UN-facilitated 4+4 dialogue.

The agreement, signed on August 30, addresses key elements of Libya’s political roadmap. UNSMIL said the House’s endorsement represents an important step toward advancing a consensus-based process for national elections.

The UN mission said the agreement contributes to efforts to overcome Libya’s political impasse, strengthen national institutions and establish conditions for inclusive parliamentary and presidential elections.

The House approved the agreement during a session in Benghazi chaired by Speaker Aguila Saleh. UNSMIL said broad parliamentary backing could help advance the wider UN-supported political roadmap.

The development keeps elections, institutional unification and political dialogue at the centre of Libya’s current political agenda, while further steps remain necessary before elections can take place.
