Guinea Opposition Calls for End to ‘Dictatorship’ as Political Tensions Rise

CONAKRY, Guinea — Guinea’s political tensions have intensified after opposition parties and civil society organisations called on citizens to “put an end to the dictatorship” under President Mamadi Doumbouya.

The Forces Vives de Guinée coalition accused the government of using repression, violence and corruption and criticised what it described as restrictions on political freedoms. The group also condemned the dissolution of dozens of political parties and restrictions on the press.

The opposition also questioned the credibility of recent presidential and parliamentary elections, arguing that Guineans had been denied a genuine choice of political leadership. Parties supporting Doumbouya won more than 80% of parliamentary seats in the May elections, according to AFP.

The latest statement adds to growing political debate over Guinea’s democratic direction, opposition activity and the balance of power under Doumbouya’s presidency.
