ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Ethiopia is entering a new political phase following the final results of the country’s Seventh General Election, with the ruling Prosperity Party holding a commanding majority in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia confirmed that the Prosperity Party won 438 of the 486 contested parliamentary seats, giving the party a clear mandate to form the next federal government.

The new parliamentary balance is expected to shape Ethiopia’s political agenda over the coming years, including decisions on economic reforms, national unity, security and government policy.

Regional council results also showed strong performances by the Prosperity Party in several areas where voting took place, further strengthening its political position.

The major challenge for the incoming administration will be turning its electoral mandate into political stability and effective governance.

Opposition and smaller political parties have called attention to the country’s continuing political and security challenges, while the government has pledged to pursue development and national progress.

The election result also gives Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s political leadership substantial room to advance its policy programme.
