CAIRO — Egypt is strengthening its national nutrition and food-security strategy through renewed support for wheat-flour fortification, improved food-supply systems, and nutrition-focused social protection programs.
The government’s cooperation framework with the World Food Programme includes support for the wheat-flour fortification programme, stronger food-supply chains, quality assurance, and improved data systems for nutrition and food-security planning.
Nutrition experts say food fortification can play an important role in improving access to essential nutrients, particularly among vulnerable groups. The renewed focus on fortified flour is expected to support efforts to address micronutrient deficiencies, including anemia, especially among children and women.
The initiative also links nutrition policy with broader food-security efforts, including more efficient supply chains, improved food assistance, and stronger evidence-based decision-making.
Health and development specialists say combining nutrition interventions with social protection and food-system improvements could help Egypt improve diet quality and strengthen long-term public health.
Egypt’s renewed focus on food fortification highlights the growing importance of nutrition policy in the country’s wider strategy to improve food security and protect vulnerable communities.
