Botswana has launched a new electric public transport initiative through the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, marking a fresh investment in sustainable mobility and the country's transport sector.
The initiative, known as Tana Metrobus Public Transport, will operate through Tana Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of CEDA responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the electric bus service.
The project is designed to improve public transport accessibility, efficiency and convenience while introducing environmentally friendly transport solutions.
CEDA says the electric bus service will complement existing transport operators rather than compete directly with them. The agency recognises the contribution of local combi owners, drivers and transport businesses to employment and citizen entrepreneurship.
The initiative could create new opportunities across Botswana's transport ecosystem, including vehicle maintenance, technical services, charging infrastructure and other supporting businesses as electric mobility develops.
However, the government has not yet announced the operational routes, service schedules or detailed commercial arrangements. Further information is expected as implementation progresses.
The launch represents another step towards modernising Botswana's public transport system, while giving citizen-led business structures a role in delivering new infrastructure and services.
