KIKUUBE, Uganda — Uganda is moving closer to its long-awaited oil production milestone as the country prepares to officially name its crude oil blend.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to unveil the commercial name of Uganda’s crude oil on September 2, 2026, during a ceremony at the Kingfisher Development Area in Kikuube District.

The ceremony comes as Uganda advances preparations for first oil, with major petroleum infrastructure and production projects being developed around the Lake Albert region.

Giving the crude blend a commercial identity is an important step as Uganda prepares to introduce its petroleum onto international markets.

The oil sector is expected to become an important driver of Uganda’s economy, with potential effects on government revenues, infrastructure development, investment and employment.

Museveni is also expected to inspect progress at key oil projects during the visit, highlighting the government’s focus on moving the industry toward production.

Uganda’s entry into the international crude oil market could mark a major turning point for the country’s energy and economic development, although the government will face continued pressure to ensure petroleum revenues are managed transparently and sustainably.
