Two U.S. government personnel were accidentally shot by Eswatini defence force soldiers during an anti-smuggling operation in the northeastern part of the country.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 11, in the rural Maphiveni area, according to Eswatini authorities. The two U.S. personnel sustained minor injuries, while their identities and specific activities in the area have not been publicly disclosed.
Eswatini government spokesperson Thabile Mdluli said an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The U.S. State Department confirmed that the affected personnel are safe and said it was working with Eswatini authorities on the investigation.
The Eswatini army has described the incident as a diplomatic matter being handled between the two countries. The government has also said it remains committed to its longstanding relationship with the United States.
