Health authorities in Botswana’s North West District have recorded 281 cases of diarrhoea among children under five, with two deaths reported, prompting increased surveillance and response measures.
The figures were presented during a district council meeting on September 17, where officials urged parents and caregivers to seek medical attention early when children develop symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and dehydration.
Authorities also encouraged communities to strengthen hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and ensuring that drinking water for children is safe. Health officials are continuing efforts to contain infections while communities are also being urged to prepare for the upcoming malaria-prevention campaign.
The district reported that 16 of its 29 health facilities do not have dedicated ambulances, although a new ambulance worth P1.2 million was donated to Maun General Clinic in September.
