Botswana has showcased a new wave of digital innovation after its Second Open Data Innovation Challenge brought together 24 teams to develop technology solutions using government data.

The three-day innovation sprint was held at the Botswana Digital & Innovation Hub (BDIH) in Gaborone, with teams working on applications and prototypes covering tourism, healthcare, agriculture and energy. The challenge attracted more than 270 applications before 24 teams were selected.

Four teams — Otherlands, Medi-Live, Moozy AI and Green Flame Digital — emerged as overall winners in the respective innovation tracks after developing and presenting their solutions to judging panels.

The initiative highlights how Botswana is seeking to turn open government data into practical digital products, while encouraging local technology entrepreneurs and developers to build solutions around national priorities.

The development also comes as the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) begins a new 2026–2031 strategy focused on research, innovation and commercially relevant technology solutions.
