LOMÉ — Togo is taking a new step to strengthen its healthcare research and biotechnology capabilities through a planned membership of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).
The government adopted a draft law authorizing Togo's accession to the organization during the Council of Ministers meeting on August 4, 2026. The proposal must still go through the country's legislative process before membership can be finalized.
The ICGEB is an intergovernmental organization focused on life sciences, biotechnology, health, agriculture and scientific innovation. Its network includes more than 70 member states.
For Togo, membership could give universities, research institutions, scientists and students greater access to international research projects, scholarships, scientific exchanges and funding opportunities.
The initiative is particularly significant for public health and biomedical research, where stronger scientific capacity can support the development of locally relevant solutions and improve cooperation with international research institutions.
Togo has also been seeking to strengthen links between research and practical economic and social needs. If the accession process is completed, the partnership could help expand national capabilities in health biotechnology, disease research, food security and environmental science.
The move positions scientific research and biotechnology as increasingly important parts of Togo's strategy to strengthen healthcare and national innovation capacity.
