KÉDOUGOU, Senegal — Health authorities in southeastern Senegal have intensified efforts to contain a diphtheria outbreak affecting the Kédougou and Saraya health districts.

A retrospective review of medical records identified 591 suspected cases between May and August 2026, while three cases have so far been laboratory-confirmed. Three children under five have also died at Amath Dansokho Regional Hospital, with investigations continuing to determine whether diphtheria directly caused the deaths.

Authorities have responded by increasing epidemiological surveillance and deploying specialist medical teams to the affected region. The teams are working to identify additional cases, investigate transmission and support local healthcare workers.

Health officials are also focusing on targeted vaccination, contact tracing and public awareness, particularly in remote communities where access to healthcare can be more difficult.

The outbreak is putting renewed attention on vaccination coverage and disease surveillance in eastern Senegal, as authorities work to prevent further transmission.
