SÃO TOMÉ, São Tomé and Príncipe — Political attention is intensifying in São Tomé and Príncipe as the country approaches the September 27, 2026 legislative, regional and local elections, with the European Union continuing its independent observation of the electoral process.

The EU Election Observation Mission recently published an updated fact sheet on September 8, outlining its objectives, methodology, composition and timetable for monitoring the upcoming elections.

The mission is assessing several dimensions of the electoral process, including the political environment, election administration, legal framework, campaign activities, media coverage and social-media environment.

EU observers are also expected to meet representatives of the National Election Commission, political parties, civil society, media organisations and other stakeholders. On election day, observers will monitor polling, vote counting, results tabulation and electoral complaints.

The September elections will be particularly important because voters will elect members of the 55-seat National Assembly while also participating in regional and local contests.

The vote follows the July presidential election, in which Carlos Vila Nova was re-elected, giving the country a newly renewed presidential mandate ahead of the parliamentary contest.

With the September 27 vote approaching, political parties are focusing on campaigning and voter mobilisation, while election authorities are working to complete preparations.

The EU observation mission’s continued presence is expected to provide an independent assessment of the electoral process as São Tomé and Príncipe prepares for another major test of its democratic institutions.
