LOMÉ, Togo — Togo’s Senate opened its second ordinary session of 2026 on October 1, bringing senators back to Parliament for a new period of legislative and budgetary work.

The opening session was held at the Senate headquarters in Lomé under the leadership of Senate President Barry Moussa Barqué, with National Assembly President Komi Selom Klassou, government members and diplomatic representatives in attendance.

The session is described as primarily budgetary, in line with the constitutional calendar of the Fifth Republic. Togo’s Constitution provides for the second ordinary parliamentary session to begin on the first Thursday of October.

The opening also highlights the functioning of Togo’s bicameral Parliament, with the Senate and National Assembly operating as the two chambers of the legislature.

During the new session, senators are expected to examine matters within their constitutional responsibilities, including public finance, legislation and national policy issues.

The parliamentary return comes as Togo continues to implement the institutional framework established under the Fifth Republic, with both chambers participating in the country's legislative process.
