ABUJA/LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria is stepping up its ambitions to become a major artificial intelligence hub in Africa, with technology leaders and policymakers preparing for the second edition of GITEX Nigeria.
The event is scheduled for August 31 to September 3, 2026, across Abuja and Lagos and is expected to place Nigeria’s digital transformation and AI ambitions in the international spotlight.
Nigeria is seeking to move beyond being primarily a consumer of technology by developing local AI talent, digital infrastructure and home-grown technology solutions capable of competing in international markets. Recent industry reporting estimates that Africa’s emerging AI opportunity could reach $1 trillion, increasing competition among African countries to attract investment and build technical capacity.
For Nigeria, the expansion of AI could create opportunities across fintech, healthcare, agriculture, education, cybersecurity and government services. However, sustained investment in connectivity, computing infrastructure and specialist skills will be essential to convert the opportunity into long-term economic value.
With GITEX Nigeria approaching, the country’s technology ecosystem is preparing for increased attention from investors, startups and global technology companies.
