KEBBI, Nigeria — Nigeria is facing renewed security concerns after a deadly confrontation between police and suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The clash occurred on Monday when security personnel intercepted a heavily armed group travelling between Kebbi and neighbouring Zamfara State, according to police. Ten police officers and two civilians were killed, while 17 suspected bandits also died during the gun battle. Two other officers were injured.
Police said the attackers were travelling on motorcycles and that security forces subsequently regained control of the area. Authorities have continued operations to locate suspected gunmen who escaped following the confrontation.
The latest violence highlights the continuing security pressure across northwestern Nigeria, where armed groups have carried out kidnappings, raids and attacks on communities.
The incident is likely to increase calls for stronger security operations and improved protection for communities along the Kebbi-Zamfara border region.
