ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s opposition parties are entering a fresh phase of political negotiations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with leading figures considering whether a single candidate could unite their competing political interests.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party figure Peter Obi are among the prominent opposition leaders involved in discussions over a possible common candidate. Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has also featured prominently in the wider opposition calculations.
The consultations come as opposition groups attempt to overcome differences involving party structures, regional support bases and presidential ambitions. A successful agreement could significantly reshape the 2027 contest against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC.
The biggest challenge remains agreeing on who should lead a unified ticket. Different opposition camps have competing preferences, while questions remain about which political platform would host a potential alliance.
The debate is gaining momentum as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 election cycle. Whether the opposition can convert its current consultations into a durable political alliance could become one of the defining stories of Nigeria’s next presidential race.
